Here’s a quick update from Scotland — today I played Crail, the world’s 7th oldest golf course. I shot under 95, which given the wind and my lack of play is good. I did par the course’s hardest hole on the Balcomie course, called Hell’s Hole.

Here’s a description:

The most memorable hole is No. 5, Hell’s Hole, a 447-yard, par-4 that is crescent-shaped left-to-right around the edge of the North Sea. You can bite off as much as you feel comfortable off that right dogleg.

I destroyed my drive, hit a low second shot beneath the wind to land on the back fringe, chipped within 5 and sank the par putt. It’s a gorgeous course.

If you get to St. Andrew’s/Fife area, and can’t play St. Andrew’s, try this course. It’s a hell of a walk, but well worth it. The golf gods were kind with the weather.
